What does remission really mean?
People keep asking me if I am OK now. Meaning have I recovered from cancer, am I in remission? Well the answer to that is: Maybe. This is yet another one of those times where the movies have given us a misguided interpretation of what happens during a cancer journey. There is no remission certificate or absolute date of when you are cancer free. You start with your first set of treatment options and then move on the next, then the next, until you hit the 5 year mark. All prognosis statistics are given relative to 5 years. After that, you are game for anything to take your life! After surgery my chances of survival (for the next 5 years) was say 91%, chemo made this 92%, Herceptin 93%, tamoxifen (a hormone therapy drug taken for 10 years) 95%. So yeah my chances of not dying from breast cancer in the 5 years are over 90%…..but hey who’s counting? It’s not really about the numbers, just your commitment to keep putting one foot in front of the next. Besides am I not more likely to get hit by a bus, so they say?!
Remember to keep taking those pills!
Love to you all
