That will never happen to me

At the age of 38 I was diagnosed with breast cancer and in that moment my world completely changed.  As a mother of two young boys, who was relatively healthy, and made sensible life choices, I was shocked that this happened to me.  During this time the love and support I received was both profound and humbling.  I was able to put one foot in front of the next and move forward into recovery.   One aspect that still rings in my ears is “that would never happen to me” and I think we are all guilty of this.  Maybe it is a coping strategy or maybe we just don’t give life threatening diseases any thought at all.

Today I feel I still lead a relatively similar life and have not gone to extremes to try and avoid the big C in the future.  For example some go total organic and vegan.  Some exercise more than they used to.  Some give up drinking all together.  All these are perfectly understandable things to change in one’s life after cancer.  For me I still have “that would never happen to me” ringing in my ears and it is this voice in your head I want to speak to.  1 in 8 women will get breast cancer by the time they are 85 so it could happen to you.  It is vital that you act on any changes you see in your body.  Keep up with your regular checks, pap tests, prostate exams, skin checks….it could make the difference between life and death.

Breast Cancer Recovery

I took a photo of my recovery every week for over a year.  Here is a montage video I put together showing my recovery.  Please take a look, like, comment, share and remember to check your bits.  It could save your life.

Join our Facebook group – Be Kind to Yourself

Check out the link to our Facebook group.  We talk about being kind to yourself, acceptance, mindset, selfcare, mental health and how we might deal with some of the tough bits life throws at us. Together we are not alone and you may make that difference to someone else by sharing your story.

Boadicea Brown is a safe and supportive community to share about life, love, health and what it is to be who you really want to be. Everyone will face something difficult at some point in their lives, and it is so important to know that you are not alone, and people around you care and understand. Sharing our stories and struggles gives strength and insight. Together we can break down some of those barriers, share what we have learnt, give others a purpose, give ourselves a voice, and learn to accept ourselves and each other.

Remember, be kind to yourself, you are amazing!
